UNIVERSITY WORK

Some of the writing we did for my final piece in university in which we created our own magazine called 'Subterranean' which i was one of two main creators and editors and writers for. We received a 1st for the project.

THE REBEL RIOT

When most people think of punk, they tend to think of Britain, but international punk solidarity has been an important part of the punk movement since its inception, including in Myanmar (formally Burma) where local and English punks work together to tackle homelessness.

NO SWEAT: PUNKS AGAINST SWEATSHOPS.

The Punk scene is renowned for its strong political beliefs, with bands spouting messages of anti-capitalism, anarchism and working-class solidarity, but for many bands this ethos isn’t matched in practice, as many still use T-shirts for merchandise made in sweatshops. Grassroots campaign group No Sweat is taking a stand against this.

ONE SLUT RIOT – SUBVERSIVE POLITICAL ART

From Picasso’s surrealism to Andy Warhol’s visual pop art, one of the most important aspects of art is its ability to subvert expectations and help people question their perspectives and challenge perceived norms. Weaving political messages throughout her art, Sierra, who creates under the moniker ‘One Slut Riot’, is all about producing work that subverts, challenges, and celebrates gender, sexuality, animal rights, and anti-capitalism.

ONLINE RADICALIZATION AND THE DARKER SIDE OF SUBCULTURES

Subcultures are usually places where people can find themselves, feel comfortable and express their personalities in positive ways. IF THE KIDS ARE UNITED

British punk never died, and in 2020 it’s as subversive as ever. David Pratt looks back at how the scene began, and meets some of the characters keeping it alive.

PUNK’S NOT WHITE!

4 non-white punk bands you should know.

Punk has always been regarded as a socially conscious subculture, with bands such as The Clash, Conflict and Crass putting out some of the most politically charged music of their time, calling out racism, sexism, animal abuse and challenging the British state, but despite the progressive ideology promoted by many of these bands there is still one thing that is missing.
